FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1.Q- What is the difference between canvas and muslin?

Answer: Canvas is a heavier material than muslin. After painting, it must be kept rolled up between uses or when transporting to avoid creasing the material. There are pros and cons between canvas backdrops and muslin backdrops.

Advantages of canvas over muslin.

1. Usually painting is hand brushed on canvas so the colors are more intense and richer.

2. Canvas can be relied on to photograph the same, time after time.

3. If cared for, a well painted canvas drop will last many years.

4. It gives a more formal look.

Advantages of muslin over canvas:

1. It is a less expensive material so you get more for your money.

2. It is easier to transport as it can be stuffed in a bag.

3. It can be draped for a casual look.

2. Q-What is the difference between your Basic and Standard muslins?

Answer: The main difference is the time it takes to produce them. They start out as the same weight raw muslin. All of the Basic muslins take only one process to the finished piece. They are dyed a solid color or in the case of the textured blue, grey and brown they are airbrushed with a single color. The Standard on the other hand go through several steps to reach the finished product. They must be washed, then dyed with one or more colors. In addition they may be painted also or in the case that they are airbrush painted, they will require two or more colors of paint. That is the reason for the price difference between Basic and Standard.

3.Q-What is the difference between painted and dyed muslin?

Answer: Painted muslin is just as it says-painted. Normally acrylic paint is diluted and sprayed on the surface of raw muslin to achieve the desired effect. The advantage of painted muslin is that we can control the pattern. The disadvantage is that it is a little stiffer and more "wrinkley" than dyed muslin. The advantage of dyed muslin over painted is that it has a softer texture. The disadvantage is that we can only control the pattern to a certian extent.

4.Q-My painted muslin shows fold creases and wrinkles. What can I do?

Answer: As painted muslin is naturaly stiffer than dyed, it will show wrinkles more. One good way to help this is to put it in a dryer with a damp towel and a sheet of fabric softner. This will soften it up a lot. Another remedy is to hang it, then spray it lightly with a clear water spray (don't soak it). Many people just keep it stuffed in the bag as they like the fine "spiderweb texture this creates.

5. Q-My muslin or canvas is a little smaller than the stated dimensions. How come?

Answer: Muslin is a cotton material so it tends to shrink a little when it is washed and dried. Your muslin may have started out as a 9'x18' but if it must be washed in the process, the finished size may be 8'6"x17'6".On canvas, we may have to trim a little off the edges so it will roll up and hang straight.
